More and more Companies are finding that there are financial and cultural benefits by working to a Quality Management System (QMS) - by having a QMS they are assured that their work processes will consistently provide the same end product or service. This removes the need for constant checking and supervision and frees up staff for more productive work. Having established the process, it is possible to examine it in detail and probably improve it - particularly if a TQM programme has commenced, as staff will be volunteering to set up improvement teams to further improve the process, and thus produce a better product or service.

Many Companies are now registering their QMS to ISO 9000, the International Standard for Quality Assurance. This is being done for a number of reasons, not least because of market and client pressure. Clients are no longer prepared to accept a product or service that does not meet their minimum requirements. Only those Companies that have been registered by a Certification Authority as having a QMS that will consistently produce an acceptable standard, will be asked to provide tenders for goods or services.
