01-53 Health and Safety Policy

As Managing Director I am vested with overall responsibility for health and safety within BEL. This Health and Safety Policy Statement, which is to be observed throughout the BEL offices, reflects the importance which I have attached to the health, safety and welfare of all employees of BEL and other persons who may be affected by BEL's activities.

To ensure that BEL meets its health and safety responsibilities my policy is that BEL will:

I wish to exercise my health and safety responsibilities through the Project Directors the task of applying my policy in their areas of work. I further expect members of the BEL project teams to ensure that at every level personnel receive appropriate training and have at their disposal adequate resources to discharge their health and safety responsibilities.

I task each Project Director with ensuring that an adequately detailed statement has been prepared laying out the organisation and arrangements for discharging his or her duties with respect to this Policy Statement in his or her area of responsibility.

These statements will also indicate the procedure for monitoring the effectiveness of the arrangements in identifying and controlling hazards. With my Policy Statement they form the overall health and safety policy statement requiring by the HSWA. The overall statement is to be brought to the attention of all employees to whom it applies.

In addition apart from the duties placed on managers down to the most junior level, each member of BEL is required to take reasonable care for his or her health, safety and welfare and that other persons who may be affected by his or her acts or omissions at work. This requires the reporting to managers of any work situation that gives rise to serious or immediate danger; or shortcoming in arrangements that may create danger.

This Policy Statement will be reviewed dependent on changes in legislation, as should the local statements detailing organisations and arrangements.
